Description

Rosa after:
Rosa Parks who, by refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955, started a bus boycott that lasted a total of 381 days. The boycott, led by a young Martin Luther King Jr., began the day after Parks was sentenced for violating the segregation laws and ended only when the US Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation violated the Constitution.
This protest, in effect, was the starting point for the civil rights struggle for the abolition of apartheid rules in the southern United States.
For his community activism, Parks received several awards, including the Freedom Medal and the Congress Gold Medal. Rosa was 92 years old when she died in Detroit in 2005.
