Description

Fredrika after:
Fredrika Bremer was born in 1801 in Pikis parish, near Turku, but moved to Stockholm at the age of four. Her father was a successful businessman and the family was very wealthy, they owned both a parade floor in the city and the historic estate Årsta castle. She is considered to be the Swedish women's movement's foremost pioneer and as a writer she introduced the realistic novel in Sweden. Her novel Hertha, which is about how important it was for women to get their authority, provoked debate and the so-called Hertha discussion led to the Riksdag in 1858 deciding that unmarried women would have the right to apply to come of age at 15 years of age.

Fredrika was already internationally acclaimed during her lifetime and her books were sold all over Europe. Fredrika-Bremer-Förbundet was formed in 1884 (19 years after Fredrik's death) and is one of Sweden's oldest women's organizations.
