Description

Pat after:
Pat Parker was born in 1944 in Texas and was an American poet and activist. Both her poetry and activism draw from her experience as an African-American lesbian feminist. In poetry, she wrote about her poor childhood with sexual abuse and the murder of a sister. After two divorces, the first of which was with a man who abused her, she came out as a lesbian and "embraced her sexuality".

Pat was politically active and had an early involvement in the Black Panther Party, the Women's Revolutionary Council, and formed the Women's Press Collective. Her heart issues were gay rights in society, domestic violence and the rights of people of color. She released five collections of poetry and has a community center in Chicago named after her - Pat Parker Place. Pat died of breast cancer at the age of 45.
