Sometimes your jewelry needs a little extra love, especially if it hasn’t been worn for a while and has become discolored. Here we share tips on how to clean your jewelry so it looks like new again!
TIP! Store your jewelry airtight, for example in the bedroom. Avoid the bathroom where they oxidize faster due to humidity. We also recommend taking off necklaces when you sleep, as there is a risk they might get caught on something during the night and stretch. A thin silver chain can stretch up to 10 cm (!) before breaking. You also extend the jewelry’s lifespan by 8 hours a day by taking it off while you sleep :)
All our jewelry is made from 925 sterling silver or 18k gold—no other strange metals!
SILVER
You can easily clean your silver jewelry with either silver dip or the old-fashioned household trick we recommend here at the bottom of the page.
Silver oxidizes due to sulfur in the air, and it can also oxidize faster depending on what we secrete from our skin.
NOTE: Jewelry with a black-oxidized detail (like Robin and Ida) should not be soaked in any polishing solution, as the oxidation will disappear if you do. These should only be polished with a polishing cloth.
Jewelry with stones can also be cleaned the same way, as long as the stone is a genuine gemstone.
If the jewelry is very dirty or has a coating of something (like lotion or grease), you may need to clean it before polishing. Use lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap on a soft toothbrush and gently brush the jewelry clean before polishing.
BLACK-OXIDIZED SILVER
Black-oxidized silver is exactly what it sounds like: silver that has been oxidized using a special oxidizing solution. You shouldn’t do anything at all to these pieces—how great is that?! However, the oxidation on the jewelry can fade over time, and then we can always re-oxidize it for you.
